The Basics
If you've just moved or have a new kindergartener, one of your first steps (if you haven't already done so) is to get them registered. Private schools may not be able to admit any new students so close to the start of school. Just reach out to them and ask. If you are going to be using CCSD (Clark County School District), you can register here.
If you have returning students, you may want to log into your Infinite Campus account and make sure all information is updated. Keep an eye out for emails from your kids' schools. Schools should be reaching out soon to announce specific Back To School events where you can meet teachers and see your child's classrooms. If you haven't heard anything by August 9th, you may want to contact the school to make sure they have current contact info for you.
Visiting your child's school website and downloading their own calendar can help you get a leg up on the school year, along with the district's calendar (which you can find here). The first day of school for CCSD is Monday, August 12th. Add the important dates to your planner. If you have notice of special events, such as concerts, games and other school events, you can pass that information along to family members who want to participate. Knowing their scheduled days off ahead of time will help you plan for any childcare needed, as well.

After School Programs/Tutoring
We all have varied schedules that sometimes don't coordinate with school schedules. If you find yourself in need of before or after school care for your child, you can contact your child's school to see how to sign up for Safekey or click here. It's super easy to use and you can set it up, as needed, as long as you pay before the school day starts. There are plenty of options if you are looking into extracurricular activities. You can sign the kids up for a dance class or a karate class. Our Parks and Recreation department has a wide array of options set right after school, check here for things like the Whitney Hangout, a program made specifically for older kids. If you think your student may need a little extra help, here are some options for tutors:

Preparing for the First Day
In the weeks leading up to the first day of school, there is tons to do. There's school clothes, supplies, hyping the kids up to set their minds on learning time. You can head to any number of stores for school supplies, plus there are a number of events around town where you can get some. This doesn't have to break the bank. Visiting your local dollar store can get you what you need. CCSD has a list of recommendations for grades K-5 here. You can also contact your child's teacher to find out specifically what they will want to use. Teachers are always looking for help with supplies, also. Picking up a few extra pieces for the classroom will go a long way, especially for those students who may not be able to get everything they need or simply forget to bring something.

Staying Healthy
Getting ready for school also means making sure everyone is up to date on required immunizations, getting physicals (especially if your kiddos are participating in sports), checking their vision so they can see the board easily and learning how to keep proper hygiene to avoid getting sick. It's bound to happen in those first couple of weeks but they can help lessen the pain. You can find the immunizations required by CCSD here.
