Access to Documentary As Part of Black History Month

Don’t miss your chance to see Black Men in White Coats

By Press Release Provided by Henderson Libraries February 18, 2021

Henderson, NV – As part of Henderson Libraries’ annual recognition of Black History Month, free access to the screening of a timely documentary will be offered. The film, Black Men in White Coats, explores the disparities and systemic barriers preventing Black men from becoming medical doctors.

According to the documentary, fewer Black men applied to medical school in 2014 than in 1978. You’ll gain insight into this disturbing trend that shows how even though healthcare accounts for nearly 20 percent of the United States’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP), a significant portion of that percentage is driven by disparities in a system that lacks diverse physicians. The film will make viewers think about how different the situation might be if the medical workforce actually reflected the patient population as well as the challenges young Black men face today. How can America ensure more Black male doctors in its future?

With the current climate in our country, this is a must-see opportunity. It has already been proven that people of diverse cultures prefer to see doctors that understand their unique challenges. If the trend of Black men not choosing medical school and subsequent career paths continues, what will the consequences be on our society at large?

Join Henderson Libraries to become educated on a topic that affects so many. The screening will be available during a three-day period by registering at https://hendersonlibraries.com/event/4867363.
