Express Your Creative Side!

Enter the Adult Creative Writing & Cover Art Anthology Contest

By Press Release from Henderson Libraries December 17, 2020

Henderson, NV – Is the word “isolate” becoming a little too familiar during this pandemic? Tap into your creative mind and use this time to express your feelings on the theme of isolate by submitting an entry to the Henderson Libraries Adult Creative Writing & Cover Art Anthology. The printed publication, Impressions: Isolate, will be accepting submissions from November 2, 2020 through January 1, 2021. This anthology will provide local authors and artists the opportunity to build name recognition and readership through its presence in Henderson Libraries' collection.

“As we all have been quarantining over the past six months, we’ve had lots of time to think about what this new normal means to us,” says Green Valley Library Adult Services Department Head Shakita Kirkland. “I know there are lots of creative individuals out there who are ready to share their ideas and this is the perfect outlet.”

The concept of isolate is multi-faceted and can be explored through many various viewpoints. Examples of isolate definitions, according to Dictionary.com, include: to set or place apart; detach or separate as to be alone; to keep (an infected person) from contact with noninfected persons; quarantine; to obtain (a substance or microorganism) in an uncombined or pure state; a person, thing, or group that is set apart or isolated, as for purpose of study; and, a person, often shy or lacking social skills, who avoids the company of others and has no friends within a group.

Submission categories exist for both writing and cover art. Creative writing entries can consist of short stories, poems, or non-fiction pieces. To be eligible for judging, entries must be original, unpublished works digitally produced, double-spaced, and submitted electronically. Up to two entries may be submitted per person in both categories.

Cover art submissions must be based on the isolate theme, be original, and be created by the submitting artist. Artwork must be presented in an acceptable, tasteful manner and must translate well from color to black and white. Additional guidelines are available at https://www.hendersonlibraries.com/website/adult-creative-writing. All entries will be judged anonymously based on content, originality, and quality of expression and judges' decisions are final.

Top-ranking manuscripts and cover art submissions will be published in the anthology Impressions: Isolate. Copies of the anthology will not be distributed or sold by Henderson Libraries; however, copies will be added to the circulating collection and available for check out.
