Kindergarten registration details for Clark County School District

By Heather Landon, Publisher SW Las Vegas, Henderson & Boulder City May 21, 2020

Though schools might not be open for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year, parents with kindergarten aged kids need to start looking into registration for the 2020-2021 school year. With the Nevada Department of Education putting a strong emphasis on the need for early learning, the state has set forth specific statutes parents, schools, and students must follow when entering kindergarten.

Kindergarten attendance is mandatory for all students of an appropriate age. Once the school year is complete, the state implements a developmental assessment to all students before they are allowed to move on to first grade. These are just some of the requirements for students entering and completing kindergarten.

We have pulled together key requirements for admission and passing kindergarten below:

Age Requirements

A child in the state of Nevada must have turned age 5 on or before September 30 of the same school year planning to attend kindergarten. State law prohibits children from being enrolled in kindergarten if they do not meet this age requirement. No early admission or entry into kindergarten is allowed.

Kindergarten is Mandatory

Attendance for kindergarten is mandatory in the state of Nevada. Parents who do not want to register their child in kindergarten can sign and file a waiver with their school district and the child must pass a developmental assessment test prior to being admitted to the first grade the following year. .

Immunizations

Prior to starting kindergarten, students must have proof they have received all required immunizations or have turned in a valid exemption form. Required immunizations include DTap, hepatitis A & B, MMR, polio, Tdap and varicella. Click here for a complete list of the vaccines required by the state of Nevada.

The state of Nevada does allow exemptions from the required vaccination schedule for medical and religious reasons. Medical exemptions require parents to submit a written statement describing the circumstance signed by the parent/guardian and physician to the governing board. For a religious exemption, a written statement indicating religious beliefs prohibit immunizations of the child must be submitted.
