Indoor fun & playtime ideas

By Heather Landon, Publisher SW Las Vegas, Henderson & Boulder City May 1, 2020

Due to the recent COVID-19 crisis, many in Southern Nevada are home due to places of business (non-essential ones) being forced to close through the end of the month (minimum). That, and the fact that schools are also closed for the remainder of the year, is making it to where all the most common indoor activities have all been done. Now kids (and adults too) are probably getting antsy and bored.

We have compiled some fun indoor activities that may help with curbing the boredom:

Coloring Contest

Coloring is not just for kids. More and more adults are finding coloring to be relaxing. Gather up those coloring books or print off some coloring sheets and have a family coloring contest. You can put everyone’s work of art on the refrigerator and vote to see who wins. The winner can pick what to make for dinner that night.

Brick Building Contest

Gather up all the building bricks in the home and host a fun contest with the family. Contests can be set around different themes, such as who can build the tallest, widest, most creative, etc. You can also theme the building contests around books, movies, etc. At the end of the contest, select a winner and he/she gets to pick a fun movie to watch that night as a family.

Family Time Capsule

Now is the time to gather the family and put together your family’s time capsule. Every member of the family can pick one item that represents them during this time to be placed in the capsule. It is also a good idea to have kids write down their thoughts about what is occurring right now with COVID-19. Put everything in the capsule (It can be a small shoe box) and tuck it away somewhere in the home. Make a not on your calendar to open in 5, 10, 15 or 20 years from now.

Craft Time

Go through the home together as a family and gather up any and all craft supplies you have. Then set a time to sit down together and create something out of the supplies you found. Be creative. You never know what you can make out of what is already in your home. IDEA: Search toilet paper roll crafts. They are in every home and there are some fun ideas out there.

Pizza Party

Order pizza in and have a pizza party. Gather the family around the television and enjoy dinner while watching a movie. Pizza parties are also perfect for family game night.

Cooking Lessons

Plan to learn how to cook something new. Check out YouTube for cooking tutorials or search for a new recipe. Get the kids involved and have everyone in the family learn how to cook a new dish to share for dinner.

Family Game Night

Host a family game night. You can do this one a week on the same night or multiple times throughout the week. You can also just play one game each time or have everyone in the family pick a game to play that night. Just make sure you are rotating and everyone in the family gets to play their favorite games.

Have an Indoor Scavenger Hunt

Make a list of things around the home and have the kids go find them. It can be things like a can of corn, a toothbrush, a red crayon, a blue pen, etc. Give each child a list or pair younger kids with the older kids to search together. What you put on your scavenger hunt list will depend greatly upon what you have in your home and the ages of your kids.

Start (or finish) Scrapbooking

Gather up all those photos and start organizing them. Once organized, gather the kids and start (or finish) putting together your scrapbooks. Kids will have fun remembering all the exciting adventures they went on. This is also a great time to start a scrapbook to remember this time. Journal and document what you did during the shutdown and your kids will have stories to pass down to their kids.

Hopefully this list helps you find fun things to do at home. Now, gather up the family and start planning your indoor play dates.
