Hiking
Pack up a picnic lunch and bring plenty of water with you when you take the kids to Hidden Falls Park in Henderson. This park is located behind the Vons on Horizon Ridge Parkway and offers a variety of things for families to enjoy. Kids will love the playground, your fur babies will enjoy the bark park and there is even a skate park for your older kids. While there you will have access to the trails that will take you up into the mountains. There is a short trail that just goes up to the top of one of the hills and there are longer paths that wind in and out of the mountains in the area.
Junior Rangers
Take the kids to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area to participate in the Junior Rangers Programs this summer. These programs offer a variety of activities, a Junior Ranger Guide and an activity book. The guide and book are free at the Lake Mead Visitor Center and at the Katherine Landing Ranger Station. This program is designed for kids 10 and older. Kids need to complete at least three activities to receive the certificate and badge.
The activity guide can also be downloaded and printed from the Lake Mead website by clicking here.
Libraries
There are six public libraries throughout the city of Henderson. All of the libraries offer books and services for residents of all ages. Plus, the library hosts events throughout the summer that are perfect for kids of all ages. Some of these events include movie nights, live concerts and age-specific story times. When it gets hot outside, a visit to the library is a great way to still enjoy time out of the house in a cool environment.
Backyard Water Fun
Break out the water hoses, put up the kiddie pools and fill up those water balloons. It is summer time and that means you can have a lot of fun in the comfort of your own backyard. Put on your swimsuits, sunscreen and break out all of the water toys. Kids love being outside and playing with water. So no matter how old or young your kids are backyard water fun is sure to be a hit this summer.
Hoover Dam
Pack up the kids and go explore the Hoover Dam. Walk across the dam from one state to another as you teach kids about the history of the dam and the impact it had on the area. While there you can enjoy a tour of the dam, explore the visitor’s center and take some amazing photos. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy lunch on one of the picnic tables at the top of the hill on the Arizona side or grab a bite to eat from the snack shop by the parking garage.
Picnics
Make plans to get out of the house and have some fun with a traditional picnic. Use cookie cutters to make cute finger sandwiches, pack some pretzels and baggies of fruits and vegetables. Make it an entire day activity by having the kids help out with shopping, preparing the picnic and then tossing a ball around at the park after eating. There are many picnic spots throughout the Henderson area and you are sure to find one that has other things to do that your kids will love.
Bike trails
Henderson is a very bike-friendly community and offers bike lanes on roadways and tons of bike paths throughout. For those with kids who can ride bikes, get out in the late afternoon just before the sun sets and enjoy riding through one of these paths. It will not only be fun for the family to do together, it will also help wear out the little ones and help them fall asleep at bedtime.
No matter what you plan to do this summer, you and the kids are going to have a great time. This is because you will be doing it together. Many of these activities will take you out of the house, giving you the opportunity to explore your hometown together. Have fun this summer and enjoy it. School will be here before you know it.
