Clark County Museum offers families an educational experience

One of the first places we were excited to visit when we moved to the area five years ago was the Clark County Museum. I was even more excited to discover the museum was just down the road from us. I love all things history and from researching before our move, I discovered this was the place to go to learn more about the local history.

After visiting the Clark County Museum often, we quickly discovered how much our son, who is now 16, loved the way they presented everything. We especially loved how he asked us questions and learned something new, each and every time we visited.

“Clark County Museum’s 30 acres offers a glimpse into the past of Southern Nevada,” Amber Colbert of the Department of Parks and Recreation for Clark County. “While touring the museum, visitors can explore a timeline display of dioramas in the exhibit center, travel to a resurrected ghost town from the 1880’s, visit a railroad depot and board a caboose, and stroll the tree lined Heritage street with seven historical structures and homes.”

Colbert said that it is important to get kids to learn about local history. This is because it is part of their heritage, part of what has led to the world they are a part of.  “I believe learning local history,” she continued. “Can also inspire children to become positive parts of our community.”

The museum offers more than just a place to look into Southern Nevada’s past. They have some fun activities kids can do to help enhance their learning experience. According to Colbert, the museum offers a Museum Explorer Finders Guide, which is a scavenger hunt that takes kids through the entire museum. Ask about the guide when you get to the museum, so your kids can immediately start their learning adventure.

The most popular part of the museum is the exhibit showcasing the different houses. Colbert said kids up to age 12 seem to enjoy walking into the homes from the 1920s to 1960s and see what life was like back then. The teens, she continued, also love this area, but tend to look more at the smaller details, such as clothing, decor and technology of the past.

The Clark County Museum is the perfect place to teach kids about local history, while they are having fun exploring. If visiting in the summer, make sure to bring water, sunblock and maybe a large brimmed hat as two-thirds of the museum is outside.

“While at the museum,” Colbert offered some fun tips for an exciting and engaging visit. “Challenge children to compare what they are seeing to what they have in their homes and lives.” Almost like a fun game of Eye Spy.

Discover why the Clark County Museum has been a place where families go to provide their children with memorable, immersive learning experiences. Colbert says their exhibits offer kids an opportunity to provoke their imagination and introduces them to unknown worlds and subject matter, as well as offering unique environments for quality family time.
