The holiday season is upon us and now is the time to take a new family photo. However, finding a photographer you are comfortable with and who is experienced in taking photos of kids and families, might not be as easy as you think. We have compiled a list of tips to help you find the perfect photographer for your family’s portrait needs.

  1. Ask to see a photographer's family portrait portfolio. Being able to take photos of kids/families is a lot different than photographing a wedding or landscapes. Check to make sure they do a good job and their style is what you are looking for.
  2. Think about where you want the photos taken - studio, outdoors, daytime, nighttime, etc. Find a photographer that works with the settings you are looking for. Again, don’t be afraid to ask to look at previous work.
  3. Seek out a full-time photographer. This ensures you have someone who does this as a career, not a hobby. Plus, photographers who rely on appointments may be more reliable and focused on their business, versus someone who does it part-time or as a hobby.
  4. Work together to plan the photo session. Ask the photographer if he/she has time to sit down with you prior to the photo shoot. This is a great time to offer up any planning ideas, get to know the photographer better and to share some tips on how to take photos with your kids.
  5. Ask the photographer is he/she offers any assistance in ordering, if it is done in person or online and if he/she offers any design assistance or retouching of photos. Does the photographer help with getting the photos printed or are you handed a thumb drive and sent on your merry way?
  6. Ask friends for referrals, especially those with kids. Getting a referral from a friend helps ensure you are selecting a photographer that is liked by someone you know and has experience with kids.

Keep in mind that photography is very subjective. You might like a photographer’s style, while someone else may not. Still, take these steps when talking to a photographer who someone recommended to you.
