A Parent's Survival Guide for the First Day of School

By Signature Preparatory Charter School July 31, 2019

Summer is quickly coming to a close, and school is now just around the corner. Parents, we know what you are thinking. It's time again for early mornings, packing lunches, and shuttling kids around from school to extracurricular activities. Back to school means crazy schedules commence!

Here are a few survival tips to help gear parents up for the first day of school!

Calm the Morning Chaos: Survival Tip for Getting to School on Time

The hours leading up to school can be crazy, especially on the first day back, but with an organized plan of attack, they don’t have to be.

Create a Launchpad Ready for Morning Takeoffs

Make a dedicated departure and landing zone where you can find all your shoes, backpacks, and jackets in one spot. Make sure all the morning essentials that you need to get you and your children out the door are in an easy and accessible place. A hallway with hooks, mudroom, or hall closet are all great options. Parents, this area can house your shoes, keys, and sunglasses to grab on your way out too!

Easy & Tasty: Survival Tips for Packing their First Lunch

While time may be limited, help your child start on the right foot on day one by making a healthy lunch they will cheer about!

Lunch Idea: The Elvis Burrito

That name got your attention, right? This fun and delicious meal will get your kids singing for more! Spread peanut butter on a toasted whole-wheat wrap, then sprinkle with crumbled bacon(try pre-cooked bacon to save time), sliced bananas and drizzle with honey. Complete their lunch with rice cakes and fresh veggies.

Snack Tip: Keep Apples Fresh with a Rubber Band

An apple a day keeps the doctor away! When you send your child with fruit for lunch, you want it to stay fresh! After cutting an apple with a slicer, keep the pieces together by wrapping a rubber band around the apple to keep in the juices and prevent it from going brown by lunchtime.

Neat & Organized: Survival Tip for After School Homework Time

Don’t let one of your kitchen drawers become a catch-all for pens, pencils, markers and other school supplies.

Behind-the-door shoe hanger = homework supply organizer

Clear out that junk drawer and transform it into a homework supply organizer behind a door. Behind-the-door shoe hangers keep all your child's school supplies in one accessible place and help keep that clutter out of the kitchen. Label the clear pockets for more organization.

Squash the Anxiety: Extra Survival Tip for Kindergarten Parents

Starting school is a huge milestone for children and just as much for parents too! Dropping off your kindergartener for the first time can be an emotional day for both you and your little learner.

Make First Day Drop Off Easy

If your child has trouble leaving your side, don’t worry. Tell your kindergartener when you’ll be back and that you can’t wait to hear about his or her first day! Encourage them to sit by a friend or their teacher.

If necessary, and with teacher approval, stay a few minutes to help ease the transition. But let your child know that soon they will be staying all by themselves. Before you know it, a smile from their teacher or even fun classroom objects will catch their attention.
