Getting to know your Youth Services Specialist

Meet David McMullin of Henderson Libraries

By Heather Landon, Publisher - Macaroni Kid Henderson-Boulder City August 16, 2018

School is back in session, which means summer programs have ended at Henderson Libraries. However, that does not mean there is no need to visit the library. Younger students need to pick out new books to read for their reading logs and older students need the library for research and study time. Because there are so many resources for students at Henderson Libraries, we took the time to interview David McMullin, Youth Services Specialist. Here is what he had to say during our interview:

What inspired/encouraged you to become a librarian?

I write and illustrate picture books and chapter books. As I learned more about all of the amazing books written for young people, the more I wanted to spend my time sharing them with kids.

Is there one specific moment when you knew this was what you wanted to do

When I first started at the library, we had some school classes visit on a field trip. I had so much fun with all of the kids that I knew this is where I wanted to be.

How did your childhood experience with books or libraries affect becoming a librarian?

I did not enjoy reading as a kid. I had learning disabilities which made reading difficult. It wasn’t until I was older that I discovered how much fun reading could be. Now, I want to help kids see that even if reading is a challenge, it’s still possible to find books they will enjoy.

What was your favorite book as a child?

I read THE LITTLE PRINCE by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry about a million times.

What is your favorite children's book, or series, now?

My favorite picture book is LIBRARY LION by Michelle Knudsen, and my favorite chapter books are the Harry Potter series.

Do you have a favorite children's author and why?

I love Roald Dahl. I always get lost in his characters and worlds. They are so quirky and vivid. I especially like JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH.

What is your favorite program at the Henderson Libraries?

Yoga for Youngsters is a great way to slow down after a busy day of reading.

Is there anything else we should know about you or the Henderson Libraries?

Favorite color: Blue

Favorite animal: Fox

Favorite food: Pizza

(But blue fox pizza sounds pretty terrible.)

Thank you David for taking time to answer a few questions and help our community get to know you. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for the community at Henderson Libraries. (Plus, we agree, blue fox pizza sounds terrible.)
