Getting to know your Teen Services Librarian

Meet Christina Terriquez of Henderson Libraries

By Heather Landon, Publisher - Macaroni Kid Henderson-Boulder City July 26, 2018

Henderson Libraries offers so many fun activities for kids on our community. Everything from interactive learning to teen gatherings and crafts to game play is available at one of the branches. We recently had the opportunity to get to learn more about Christina Terriquez, Teen Services LIbrarian at the Green Valley Library, and wanted to share our Q&A we had with her.

What inspired and/or encouraged you to become a librarian?

Every time I stepped into a library, I would get an overwhelming feeling of comfort and belonging. So, who wouldn’t want that reiterated everyday as they stepped into work? Plus, I always wanted to be Rupert Giles. The dreamy English librarian from the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer (I sort of wish I was kidding about this, haha).

Is there one specific moment when you knew this was what you wanted to do?

Despite the occasional negative view I would receive about the relevance of libraries, I just knew in my heart of hearts that I wanted to work in libraries. So once I received my undergraduate degree, I just went for it and signed up for Library school – no regrets!

How did your childhood experience with books or libraries affect becoming a librarian?

I’ve always adored books and reading! Fridays at the library are my favorite day because we get our shipment of new books. I love just looking through and reading all the brilliantly written, and beautifully illustrated new books. They’re so dreamy!

What was your favorite book as a child?

I treasured all the books from my Walt Disney Fun-to-Read Library Set.

What is your favorite children's book, or series, now?

Not a children’s series (I’m the Teen Services Librarian, so I definitely read way more Young Adult series!), but I could not put down either of the books from the Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein series by Kenneth Oppel. Also, the Harry Potter series on audiobook (read by Jim Dale) was such a magical experience that I still reminisce about it to this day.

Do you have a favorite children's author and why?

Neil. Gaiman. Hands down. I’ve read his children’s books, adult books, young adult books, graphic novels – every single book I’ve read of his is just so exceptionally written and enchanting.

What is your favorite program at the Henderson Libraries?

The Teen Writing Contest! Every year, from roughly December to February, we accept contest entries from teens in grades 6 – 12. With three categories to choose from, teens can opt to compose poetry, a short story/fiction piece, or an essay/memoir. At the conclusion of judging, all participants are invited to our reception and recognition gala. Plus, all entries are published in the library’s own online digital magazine available through our website. Next year we will be hosting our 10th Annual Teen Writing Contest, and I imagine it will be just as wonderful (if not, more) then the past years!

Is there anything else we should know about you or the Henderson Libraries?

I work out of the Green Valley Library branch, please visit me! We have a really cool Teen Space for ages 10-17 with computers and video games (also, the first Friday of every month we plan to let the teens try out our new PlayStation VR!). Additionally, author and illustrator Kip Noschese (who happens to also be one of our brilliant board members) painted a really amazing space mural in our children’s area – it’s a must see!

Thank you Christina for taking the time to chat with us and helping us get to know more about you and the services available at Henderson Libraries.
